Getting the Right Siding

From Foreclosure To Green Home: The Bridgton, Maine Project

To fix up the siding we ran into one complication. Tom discovered that the house is not wrapped properly behind the siding. In fact, in many areas, there are only bare wood boards. We needed to find a way to install a good house wrap.

Our original thought for the front aluminum siding was to repaint it. We tried power washing the aluminum siding. After that the siding still looked blotchy and we were not able to get all the chalk off and on closer examination, we are not confident that painting will cover all the defects. So we decided to replace the aluminum siding with new vinyl siding.

In the back, we look into removing the siding and wrap the house, but that would mean having to deal with the wood that has lead paint. The compromise is simply to leave the existing siding in place, put house wrap over it, tape the seams, then add a new layer of vinyl siding.
