I know I can check the attic and crawl space if there is insulation. But how do I know if there is insulation in the walls?

Use a screwdriver to remove the outlet plates and you should be able to see whether there is insulation in the walls.

Thanks Jim. We checked. We have insulation in the walls, in the attic and under the floor. Why is our house still cold in the winter even with the furnace running?

With furnace on and still cold means cold air is coming in from the outside. You may want to go to a hardware store to buy a weather stripping kit and do it yourself. Air seal around all the windows and doors. Make sure damper is closed when fireplace is not in use. This simple steps should help. For better comfort, an energy audit would help to find out leaks from other areas, such as attic and crawl space. After the test, the energy specialist will provide a report detailing problems and solutions.
