There are two types of collector used in solar hot water heater.
1) Flat plate collectors
2) Evacuated tubes
Which absorb energy from the sun to heat water for your home. After that the hot water store in insulated tank for you’re further used. This hot water you can use any time, even also in evening and in early morning.

I think it will depend on your system.

The solar panel hot water heating works all the time ie you done switch it off.

Many have a heater installed in their hot water tank so if the sun does not heat the water you can then switch on the heater and switch it back off when the water is hot enough, this heats the water in your hot water tank.

The internal one you speak of if not in your main hot water tank then it must either have a seperate tank unlikely or it is a kind of heat as you use it similar to an electric shower.
