Don’t Throw CFL Bulbs in The Trash

As the low cost of CFL light bulbs saving 75% of energy compared to incandescent bulbs, many homes switched to CFL bulbs. CFLs are completely safe to use in homes, but they do contain a very small amount of mercury like fluorescent tubes. Never throw CFLs or fluoresecent tubes in the trash. Instead, dispose them properly like batteries, paint, thermometers, thermostats and other hazardous household items.

Recycling of products containing mercury is one of the best ways to prevent mercury from going into landfills and waterways. Some local governments have household hazardous collection programs.

For disposal options you may find them at community green festivals. To find out collection programs or disposal facilities near your area check with your local government offices or waste management companies, or go to www.earth911.org, call 1-877-EARTH911.

If you know of other facilities in your area that will dispose of these lights properly, please share with us.
