To insulate your home to save energy is a good idea. However, if you want to save more energy you may want to consider air sealing your home before installing insulation. To air seal your house is to seal all the holes, cracks and gaps in the attic, crawlspace, and around the interior and exterior of the windows casing, and doors. For large holes or gaps using foam is more effective, for small cracks using caulking materials works fine. By air sealing your home it is like your home is wearing a wind breaker; by also installing insulation it is like your home is wearing a sweater. Air sealing keep cold winter wind or summer heat from infiltrate into your home. The temperature in your home is more even. And your home is more comfortable and more energy efficient.
